Norwegian seafood company, Mowi, has announced plans to create a new broodstock and egg facility in Little Lochbroom.

The new development, in Ardessie, aims to bring in 8–10 direct new jobs, the company says, plus supply chain opportunities to the local region.

The new plan will include the inactive hatchery currently on site, which was previously owned by local salmon farmers Wester Ross Fisheries until Mowi bought it last year, is set to be replaced with the modern infrastructure.

The production of broodstock in the new development will secure egg supply to Mowi Scotland. The company also hopes that they will be able to supply eggs to other companies too, in order to improve the position for the salmon farming sector in Scotland as a whole.

The new development, which hopes to be in action by spring of 2024, is said to include state–of–the–art technology including: self–contained recirculating aquaculture systems, and temperature control.

MOWI plans to blend the new development into the natural landscape.

Mowi also took into consideration how the new building will blend into the natural environmnet of Little Lochbroom, by creating a very low–profile design. They hope it will “nestle quietly into the existing rural landscape”.The company will also conduct a community engagement process as the project develops.

Mowi said: "We proud to be an important part of Scotland’s seafood heritage, raising premium salmon to supply a growing demand for over 50 years. The key to this success is to build on the best qualities of each salmon generation. Therefore, we are planning to invest in a bespoke broodstock and egg facility in Scotland."
