ACHIEVEMENTS by the best of the north's growing renewables sector will be celebrated by a brand new awards event which will complement a well established sector conference to create the first Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Day.

The inaugural Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards will take place at the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness on Thursday April 25, the same day and venue as the Scottish Highland Renewable Energy Conference (Shrec), which will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a special look back at a decade of innovation and inspiration in a region which is recognised as a world leader in renewables development.

Both the conference and the awards event are supported by leading Scottish law firm Harper Macleod, which founded Shrec in 2010, and Scottish Provincial Press, publisher of the Executive and 14 newspaper titles across the Highlands and north-east Scotland.

As well as a look back at the hard work and innovation of Shrec's contributors over the last decade, both the conference and the awards ceremony will take a look at what is happening in the sector today, and on to future developments.

After daytime event Shrec finishes in the afternoon, the venue will be transformed into the setting for the black tie Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards, with seating for more than 200 guests, a three course meal and entertainment.

There are 10 confirmed categories, including an outstanding achievement/renewable energy champion award chosen by the judges.

Opportunities are now being offered to sponsor individual categories, providing businesses with a chance to get their name and logo in front of a cross-section of the industry's most influential figures in the north of Scotland.

SPP group publications manager Steve Barron said the group was delighted to get involved.

"Renewable energy has a long history in the Highlands, going back to the post-war hydro schemes and beyond, and makes a tremendous contribution to the north economy and the businesses at its heart," he said.

"That is something we think is worth celebrating, especially as that contribution can only increase as the sector continues to grow.

"The impact of climate change and the need to tackle carbon emissions can only make the sector more important and countries around the world are already looking to Scotland as an example of what can be achieved, especially with the pioneering tidal research currently being carried out in Orkney.

"We have much to be proud of in our area and Highlands and Islands Renewable Energy Awards will ensure that many more people are aware of what we are achieving and can achieve."
