National Trust appeals for volunteer help

A LEADING conservation charity has urged Highlanders to volunteer at its sites across the region this summer.
The National Trust for Scotland’s Highland Conservation Volunteer Group will be hard at work protecting the area’s heritage for future generations in the coming months.
The dedicated volunteers are looking for new members to join their group and get involved in caring for and protecting Scotland’s natural and national treasures.
The group will be working on projects at properties cared for by the National Trust for Scotland, Scotland’s largest conservation charity, across the Highlands.
Volunteering events take in properties from Culloden and Brodie in the east to Inverewe Gardens and Balmacara Estate in the west.
Activities range from clearing invasive species to helping out with bat surveys and carrying out footpath maintenance.
Conservation volunteer coordinator, Julie Bond, said: "Conservation volunteers play a huge part in caring for everything from our eight national nature reserves to our 1586 hectares of stunning gardens and 76,000 hectares of beautiful countryside.
"Our volunteers do what they do for the love of Scotland and we’re always keen for new volunteers to join us.
"This summer the conservation volunteer programme is jam-packed with activities and as the new season approaches, volunteering with the Trust is a great opportunity to get outdoors, explore treasures on your doorstep and do your bit in helping to protect Scotland’s heritage."
Travel, accommodation and meals are all organised for volunteers signing up for these projects. Some events are just for a single day and others can last a weekend and will have accommodation included.

The Highland Conservation Volunteers group is one of five working with the National Trust for Scotland, In 2017, these volunteers carried out nearly 10,000 hours of conservation work.
