Sainsbury’s has issued a safety warning for one of its own-brand chorizo rings over fears that some packs contain listeria bacteria.

The supermarket warned people not to eat its Taste the Difference Spanish Chorizo Iberico Ring as some packs contain the bug which can cause serious illness if eaten without cooking.

The product recall affects all packs with a best before date on or after November 23.

Anyone who purchased the food item, which costs £3.25, can return it to their local Sainsbury’s and receive a full refund.

Eating food contaminated with listeria can cause symptoms similar to flu, including high temperature, achiness, chills, sickness and diarrhoea, according to the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

In rare cases, the infection can be more severe and cause serious complications such as meningitis, which can lead to death.

Elderly people, babies and pregnant women can be more vulnerable to listeria infections.

Chilled and ready-to-eat foods are more likely to be contaminated by the bacteria, including cured meats and fish, soft cheeses and pre-made sandwiches and salads.

For most people, listeria infections are mild and the symptoms go away in a few days.

“Sainsburys would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may cause,” the supermarket said.
