A CELEBRATION of Celtic art has prompted the sale of limited edition prints by a Black Isle museum – with funds raised helping the site's coffers during lockdown.
To mark the International Day of Celtic Art – which takes place today (June 9) – Groam House Museum has produced an exclusive art print centred on the famous Book of Kells. The print is available to buy online.
This print is chosen from artwork in the museum collection by artist and teacher George Bain whose in-depth study of the drawings in the Book of Kells includes notes that he made about the content.
A Groam House spokesperson said: “We are thrilled to be making this very special and exclusive print available for sale and would like to thank the Bain family for their help and encouragement.”
Groam House Museum, in Rosemarkie, cares for the work of George Bain (1881-1968), which is recognised as a Collection of National Significance.
George Bain was an artist and teacher whose mission was to inspire everyone to make their own Celtic art. He devoted much of his life to studying the intricate mathematical designs that appear on Pictish stones and early illuminated manuscripts such as the Book of Kells.
As Scotland remains in lockdown, Groam House Museum is closed and generation of income through fundraising efforts has been halted.
Meanwhile, work to protect the collections and share their stories goes on. Money raised through sales of this art print will help Groam House to continue to care for and research the George Bain collection and preserve a significant collection of Pictish carved stones.
The art print is from the opening words of St. John’s Gospel, Book of Kells, and is printed on A3 300 gsm heavyweight art paper in full colour and will be posted in substantial cardboard tubes.
Prints are on sale online at £30 each plus postage and can be bought on the museum’s website at www.groamhouse.org.uk/index.asp?pageid=711209
