Munch bunch 'are changing attitudes'

EFFORTS to encourage more people in a Ross-shire community to grow and eat their own produce are successfully changing local attitudes to food, a Dingwall-based MSP believes.

MOO Food, which is based in Muir of Ord, was only set up by founding director Emma Whitham in March last year.

But since then the eco-conscious organisation has been working to promote sustainable, healthy local food and trying to improve traditional attitudes to produce.

Its Growing our Future scheme has been working with primary pupils, the job centre, mental health support groups and other community bodies to provide extra opportunities to grow, cook and eat healthy food.

And MSP Kate Forbes believes it is really having an impact on those living in the community.

Speaking after a visit to MOO Food and a tour of Tarradale Primary School, the MSP for Skye, Lochaber and Badenoch said: "I have been involved with MOO Food since last summer and it is super to see how much progress they have made.

"MOO Food has successfully started to change people’s attitudes towards food.

"I spoke to children at Tarradale Primary School who told me that they valued food a lot more after working with MOO Food, growing vegetables and cleaning the community fridge.

"It is really inspirational to see... how far it has come over the last year. It is a great example of how to change our poor attitude towards food and our tendency to waste food and fail to value it."

The Growing our Future project officer, Jasmin Watt, is also pleased with the progress made.

"We pride ourselves that MOO Food is for everyone. We see good food as a right for everyone, and we are making that happen in our small corner of Scotland."
