A HIGHLAND MSP is contacting Citylink to ask for more buses to be put on to support extra summer sailings between Ullapool and Stornoway.

David Stewart, the Shadow Transport and Islands Minister, is also writing to the Transport Minister and to HiTRANS to seek to secure more integrated travel services in the north.

The Labour MSP said: "It is great that extra Friday and Saturday sailings have been put on between Ullapool and Stornoway for the summer but people need to be able to get to Ullapool to catch the sailings.

"This is peak tourist time for the islands and next week’s HebFest will bring thousands of new tourists in to the area, boosting the local economy no end but we need to make sure they can get there.

"I am contacting Citylink, HiTRANS and the SNP’s Transport Minister to urge them to take steps to get additional buses en-route as a matter of urgency."

Cal Mac, which operates the Ullapool-Stornoway ferry service, announced in May that there would be four additional summer sailings each week between the two ports to meet tourist and local demand.

They will operate on Fridays and Saturdays until August 29.

The extra sailings will be carried out by MV Isle of Lewis, supporting the main vessel on the route, the new £42 million MV Loch Seaforth.
