Inverness MP Drew Hendry says he has already spoken with Fiona Hyslop over Highlanders “experiencing a deep sense of frustration and fear” over the A9, dubbed Scotland’s killer road.

Mr Hendry is also seeking an early meeting with Ms Hyslop about the dualling programme after her predecessor already agreed to one.

In his letter to the new transport minister, he wrote: “As you will be aware, just weeks ago, another life was tragically lost on the A9, highlighting the urgency of the problem we face. It serves as a heart-wrenching reminder of our shared responsibility to ensure the safety of all those who travel on our roads.

“My constituents, like people across the Highlands, are experiencing a deep sense of frustration and fear. They look to us for action, and their voices have never been louder or more urgent. They need reassurance, and they need to see tangible steps being taken to make their travel safe.”

Speaking afterward, Mr Hendy said: “I've already spoken with Fiona Hyslop, following her appointment, to stress that I'd like to meet to discuss the progress of safety and upgrades on both the A9 and the Nairn bypass as soon as she and Màiri McAllan have been able to get to work on their new briefs.

“I look forward to a formal meeting in the near future to further push the case for an accelerated program of work to increase safety and deliver for the people of this constituency.”
