Wintry conditions are expected to last well into next week, sparking warnings for motorists on the A9.

A Highland News and Media photographer reported experiencing near whiteout conditions around outside Tomatin in the last hour.

The picture he took from the side of the road shows the how the weather is deteriorating with snow gathering on the road surface.

It is shows that the Arctic blast is affecting the north of the country with some parts still recovering from Storm Gerrit.

The Met Office extended its yellow weather warning for snow and ice to Thursday – previously it had been in place until midnight on Monday – and now covers large parts of the rest of the country too.

The Met Office also indicated how snow showers are likely to get worse throughout the rest of Sunday and into Monday as “snow showers combined with gale-force winds result in the risk of blizzard conditions for the Northern Isles this afternoon.

“Areas of cloud further south could bring some patchy light rain, though sunnier breaks poking through in between.”
