An Inverness charity that helps to make life better for blind and partially-sighted people has been recognised for the way it supports its strong network of volunteers.

Sight Action, based at Beechwood House in Old Perth Road, has hit the UK quality standard for good practice in volunteer management by scooping the Investors in Volunteers award.

Manager Murray Cochrane said it was a first for the organisation.

"This award is great recognition for the hard-working volunteers who help us," he said.

"We probably couldn’t do anything without them."

And Sight Action chairwoman Maureen Macmillan presented charity volunteer Marcus Konoso with a certificate in recognition of his achievement after he completed the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon as a sponsored run and raised £1000 for the charity.

Sight Action recently attended a reception at the Scottish Parliament along with Highland Blindcraft and the Highland and Islands Society for Blind People.

The event was hosted by Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant.

She said: "The work Sight Action and Highland Blindcraft do is so important for the people of the Highlands and Islands with vision problems.

"It was a real pleasure to host them in the parliament to highlight the work they do.

"A large number of MSPs came to hear about the work they do and hear inspirational service users talk about their own experience and how they overcome their sight problems but also support others."
