A DRIVER has died following a crash between a lorry and car on the A9 near Alness, police have confirmed.

The 63-year-old man, who has not yet been named, was the sole occupant of a Fiat Bravo that was involved in a collision with a lorry at the Milnafua junction at 8.10am.

Police said his next of kin had been made aware.

The driver of the lorry received treatment for non-serious injuries at the scene.

The road was closed while investigations were carried out, with a diversion in place via Invergordon. The A9 reopened by 1.55pm.

Road Policing Sergeant Alasdair Mackay said: "Our thoughts at this time are with the man's family and friends.

"Our investigation into the collision is ongoing and at an early stage.

"I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision or could have dashcam footage to come forward as soon as possible.

"You can contact the Road Policing Unit in Dingwall by calling 101, quoting reference 583 of April 24.

"We would like to thank everyone affected by the road closure for their patience and understanding."
