Police were called to an Alness supermarket after a customer who had previously been banned entered the store and refused to leave.

But Inverness Sheriff Court heard that by the time officers arrived at the Co-op, Jamie Riley (37) of Windsor Place, Conon Bridge, had left.

Fiscal depute Grant McLennan told Sheriff Gary Aitken that Riley was traced to his mother's home in Coul Park, Alness on the same date – November 19 – where he shouted, swore and challenged officers to fight, claiming that he had a knife.

Riley was arrested and six days later, on November 25, was arrested again after taking and driving away a neighbour's car before crashing it into another vehicle at a nearby junction.

The court heard that Riley was intoxicated and "stumbled away" from the scene of the accident, "zig-zagging his way towards Windsor Place", according to fiscal depute Grant McLennan.

Police traced him to his house and arrested him. He was remanded in custody to appear by video link for sentencing.

Riley admitted threatening or abusive behaviour, careless driving, failing to report an accident, drink driving and driving without a licence.

He was jailed for six months and banned from driving for three years.
