AROUND 200 representatives of energy companies are expected to attend a major conference in the Highlands.

Invergordon-based trade body Energy North will stage its second annual conference on February 10 and 11 at Eden Court in Inverness.

The event will focus on supply chain development, infrastructure and skills. It will provide industry players from across the UK and beyond the opportunity to learn about the Highlands and Islands region’s offering as a valuable supply chain partner both in the oil and gas and renewable sectors.

Energy North launched the event at Eden Court Theatre last year in a bid to establish a dedicated all-energy event in the Highlands. Its success earned a round of applause in the Scottish Parliament after Mike MacKenzie, regional MSP for the Highlands and Islands and parliamentary liaison officer to energy minister Fergus Ewing, raised a motion to congratulate the organisation following his attendance as keynote speaker.

Ian Couper, chief executive at Energy North, said: "Following the success of last year’s event, we’re very excited to be hosting our second annual conference.

"Our aim is to attract the industry to the Highlands to showcase the wealth of services and facilities on offer, and to discuss the main issues currently affecting the industry.

"It is a very interesting time for energy in Scotland, and with services in Aberdeen struggling with demand and operators in the North Sea looking to reduce costs, supply chain services in the Highlands and Islands are ideally placed to step in and offer their support.

"The conference will not only provide a platform for the region, it will be an event for sharing ideas about the future of the industry, and supporting the sector’s continued growth in the north of Scotland and beyond."

One day of the conference will focus on smart technology, particularly smart grids, which have the potential to facilitate renewable energy transmission from rural areas and the islands.

• Energy North is a not-for-profit trade group of more than 220 members in the oil and gas, renewable energy and nuclear markets in the Highlands and Islands and Moray.
