Lord John Thurso admits he has most likely been beaten

Lord John Thurso believes voters have elected a new MP to represent Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross.

The veteran parliamentarian who has represented people in the constituency for 14 years is fairly certain that he will be defeated this morning by Highland Homeless Trust director Paul Monaghan.

The results are not yet in but Lord Thurso is pondering more time in his garden.

Speaking from he count floor at Dingwall’s Highland Football Academy he said: "I am feeling incredibly sorry for our people who have worked so hard. I have got to trott out all the redundancy notices and I will be doing my best to get them new jobs. But there are a lot of things I am quite happy to relinquish. That’s life."

Mr Monaghan said he was feeling "positive" about the final result. He said: "I think we are going to have a good night here."
