HEAVY specialist Sinclair Patience had more than one reason to smile at the recent Lochcarron Highland Games.

Not only did he smash two records on his way to the Heavies title – including one set by his father 23 years ago – he was also handed a specially-commissioned oil painting to mark the popular Games’ ruby anniversary.

And organisers were delighted not just with the record-breaking athletic feats but the strong 3000-strong turnout of locals and visitors.

Maureen Brown, chairwoman of the Lochcarron Games Association, said: "We are delighted that the day went so well and everybody enjoyed themselves. Sinclair Patience, the top Heavy athlete on the Saturday, managed to beat two course records; he achieved 76ft 5 1/2in beating the previous record holder, his father George Patience who had achieved 75ft in 1995 – an appropriate achievement for our 40th Games."

Entirely volunteer-led, the Games was a show to remember, with the Lochalsh Junior and the Ullapool & District pipe bands both providing traditional music. Speyside Falconry was also popular.

The event’s main sponsor, the Scottish Salmon Company, was also pleased the Games success. Its Chief executive Craig Anderson, said: "The event organisers worked extremely hard to make it a huge success. Congratulations to all the participants and we hope everyone who came along enjoyed the warm hospitality.
