Ross-shire community councils reform – with elections triggered for two

FOUR Ross-shire community councils which had fallen into abeyance have reformed after a call for candidates.

And there will potentially be an election to two others– Nigg and Shandwick and Dornie and District– after more nominations than vacancies available were received.

The community councils which will now reform across the Highlands include:

The following nine community councils have received more nominations than vacancies available:

Ballachulish

Cawdor and West Nairnshire

Creich

Dornie and District

Golspie

Nigg and Shandwick

Sleat

Sunart

Waternish

Candidates have the option to withdraw their nomination by noon on Tuesday, February 6 .

If there are still more nominations than the maximum membership, then a postal ballot will be held.Ballot papers will be posted out to voters and the results will be declared on Tuesday 19 March 2023.

Dornie and District has eight vacancies and 12 nominations. They are: Karen Baker; Matt Baron; Linda Brooks; Campbell Dreghorn; Chrstine Finlay; Alison Jack; Fay Mackenzie; Shona MacLennan; Alison MacRae; Donald MacRae; Fiona Matheson and Janice Nixon.

There are seven vacancies on Nigg and Shandwick and eight nominations. They are: Lee Bruton; Caron Lesley Bruton; Alex Campbell; Andrew Chisholm; Lorna Mackay; Veronica Morrison; Emma Regan and Kath Traquair.

Several community councils are set to be formed uncontested without elections required. These include:

Balintore and Hilton: John Friel; Brian Gallagher; Alastair Gill; Kevin Kirk; Dave Smith and Lindsay Watt. There remain two vacancies.

Muir of Ord: Moira Chalmers; Wendy Fraser; Dolly Martin; Dave McDonald; Russell McKay; Ally Reid and Gordon Shand. There remain three vacancies.

Resolis: Anna Ginestri; Alister Matheson; Gavin Meldrum and John Mowat. That leaves three available vacancies.

Tain: Neil Ackeroyd; George Amos; Louise Baker; Gerald Holdsworth; Elaine Houliston; Dave Macrae; Alan Mohan; Lou Rollason and Sandra Smith. That leaves two vacancies.

The total number of validly nominated candidates was less than the minimum number required and so therefore the following Community Council’s will now be dissolved:

Ballifeary

Bower

Carrbridge

East Nairnshire

Glendale

Inver

Muirtown

Portree

Smithton.
