Day by day: when will hairdressers, shops, cinemas, restaurants, entertainment venues and more open up?

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has announced a further easing of lockdown as cases of coronavirus in Scotland continue to fall – but what can you do and when?

From tomorrow:

  • Wearing face coverings in shops will be mandatory
  • Up to five households can get together outdoors, up to maximum of 15 people
  • One household can host up to two others inside, up to a maximum of eight people, including for overnight stays
  • Children aged 11 or under no longer need to physically distance indoors but young people aged 12-17 must continue the practice of physical distancing
  • Partners who do not live together, along with any children under 18 in their household,s can form an extended household without physical distancing

From Monday:

  • Organised outdoor contact sports, play and physical activity can resume for children and young people under 18
  • All dental practices begin to see registered patients for non-aerosol routine care, so no drilling – emergency dental work will be provided by urgent care facilities
  • Non-essential shops inside shopping centres can reopen under new guidance and with physical distancing
  • Face-to-face youth work can also resume but only outdoors

From Wednesday:

  • Places of worship can re-open for congregational services, communal prayer and contemplation with physical distancing and limited numbers
  • All holiday accommodation permitted under the relevant guidance
  • Indoor hospitality, like pubs and restaurants, can also let customers indoors, subject to physical distancing rules and public health advice
  • Hairdressers and barbers can restart work with enhanced hygiene measures
  • Museums, galleries, monuments, libraries, cinemas and various other visitor attractions can reopen
  • Childcare providers can open subject to individual provider arrangements
  • Easing of restrictions on attendance at funerals, marriage ceremonies and civil partnerships registrations, with physical distancing and limited numbers. Associated receptions are subject to restrictions on hospitality and household meetings

From Wednesday, July 22:

  • Motorcycle instruction and theory/hazard tests can resume. Tractor tests can also resume
  • Universities and colleges will start the phased return to campus learning as part of a blended model with remote teaching but public health measures will be in place
  • Other personal retail services such as beauticians and tailors can re-open – with enhanced hygiene measures

No specific dates have been attached to any of the following yet, and it has been announced they will not be permitted before the end of the month:

  • Reopening of non-essential offices and call centres
  • Resumption of live events (outdoors). This broad category is under review to determine which types of events may be safe to resume earlier
  • Live events (indoors)
  • Bingo halls
  • Other indoor live entertainment venues (eg theatres, music venues)
  • Indoor gyms
  • Outdoor contact sports
  • Driving lessons
