TRAIN passengers in the Highlands were hit with travel disruption this morning after lightning strikes damaged signalling.

Services were left unable to operate around 7am following the damage to the signalling system between Inverness and Beauly.

Train services on the line have since reopened but passengers may still experience disruption as some crew and units were left out of position by the earlier closure.

Coaches have been made available in substitution of train lines and ScotRail passengers have been advised to use their tickets or Smartcards on Stagecoach buses between Inverness and Wick.

Disruption is expected to last until 12pm.

More updates will be available on www.scotrail.co.uk and at @ScotRail on Twitter with live updates.

Elsewhere, the Caledonian Sleeper service experienced delays heading south due to bad weather conditions in the north of England.
