A much-loved and highly respected Tain woman has celebrated her 100th birthday with her family, friends and an honour from the King.

Lifelong reader of the Ross-shire Journal, Katharine Ross, was born on November 29 1923, and has witnessed extraordinary events of history during her lifetime.

To celebrate the milestone, friends, family and neighbours came together at the Morangie Hotel in Tain to have a wonderful day celebrating with her. The highlight of the day came when Lord Lieutenant Mrs Joanie Whiteford presented Katharine with her 100th birthday card from King Charles. Katharine was delighted.

Katharine grew grew up in Tain, and lived above the family's grocery business on Tower Street, Donald Ross MacLeod Merchants. She went to the local primary school and then on to Tain Royal Academy.

In 1939 Katharine moved to Glasgow to pursue career in the civil service. On September 3, 1939, the day before Katharine was due to start at Skerry's College in Glasgow, she has a vivid memory of being in church when the minister announced that war had been declared. The college closed to prepare for war.

Katharine moved back to Tain in 1940, working in the Post Office for 32 years until she left to get married in 1973 to Uisdean Ross who she had been to school with. They spent many years together enjoying travelling and adventures. Sadly, Uisdean passed away in 2002.

'Katharine is a lifelong reader of the Ross-shire Journal and also follows the fortunes of Ross County Football Club every week. On reaching her 100th birthday, she has shared top tips for a long, happy life.'

As a lifelong member of Tain Parish Church, she also taught Sunday school for over 25. Whilst she is not able to attend church services these days, family friend Alastair Jupp delivers a CD of the service for Katharine to listen to every week.

The secret to longevity according to Katharine is keeping a healthy lifestyle, and keeping a positive outlook. She has also always enjoyed sports, scooping medals and trophies playing for Tain Bowling Club. Those who know her well will also be aware of her passion for Ross County Football Club. She makes sure to follow their progress and matches every week.

Katharine was delighted and proud to be awarded the Imperial Service Medal.
