FANS of the big screen will today celebrate the inaugural screenings at a tiny new cinema on the Black Isle.
The 35-seat Cromarty Cinema – one of Scotland’s smallest – is housed in a newly-completed building near the ferry slipway.
The voluntary-run project has been a labour of love for the Cromarty and Resolis Film Society.
It has also joined forces with Eden Court Theatre to promote the programme of screenings which will include big new releases, films for younger people and independent movies.
Tanya Karlebach, chairwoman of the film society, said: “The opening of a purpose-built cinema in a rural town of 700 seemed a mad idea two years ago so we are incredibly excited to be opening our doors so soon.”
Although small, the cinema has state-of-the-art sound and projection. “It is pretty tiny compared to most cinemas but it is beautiful inside,” she said.
Ms Karlebach added: "The cinema is a labour of love made possible by a range of generous funders, including, Highland LEADER, Creative Scotland, Viridor Credits, The Robertson Trust, Beatrice Partnership, Highlands and Enterprise and the Foyle Foundation, as well as an enormous amount of volunteer time."
James Mackenzie-Blackman, chief executive of Eden Court, said: “I was first presented with the idea of collaborating with the Film Society on their vision for a new cinema in Cromarty not long after arriving at Eden Court.
"It immediately appealed as a bold and innovative project that would ensure world-class cinema reached more people across the Highland region we are proud to serve."
The public was given a first glimpse of the auditorium and the chance to try out the seats during an open day on Wednesday.
Tonight’s inaugural audiences will watch The Personal History of David Copperfield and Little Women, both recent releases.
Tickets for screenings will be available from Eden Court, both online and at the box office, from March. Before this date tickets can be purchased directly.
