A “false alarm” called the Kyle of Lochalsh RNLI Lifeboat into action on Thursday evening after reports that an “emergency whistle” could be heard.

The alert was raised at around 9.10pm prompting the Kyle lifeboat to attend after reports had been made to the UK Coastguard.

After surveying the scene, the call-out was deemed to be a false alarm.

A spokesperson for Kyle Lifeboat RNLI said: “Kyle lifeboat launched at 9:10pm on Thursday April 25, after the UK Coastguard received reports someone had heard what sounded like an emergency whistle coming from the Broadford Bay area.

“The lifeboat arrived on scene at 9:20pm, and immediately began a systematic search of the area.

“They were soon joined by local coastguard teams, and then at 9:35pm the UK Coastguard helicopter from Stornoway arrived on scene and assisted with the search.

“At 11:15pm, with the area having been searched thoroughly and nothing found, it was thought this was a false alarm with good intent. Therefore the search was stood down and the lifeboat returned to station.”
