THE colossal dry dock at Kishorn Port echoed to the sounds of dozens of Wester Ross school children when they got to explore it first-hand.

More than 50 youngsters and teachers from Plockton High School and the primaries in Lochcarron and Applecross were given a guided tour of the facilities during two open days.

The pupils received an interesting presentation from the port’s director Simon Russell detailing the history of the site and the future hopes and plans for the facilities. This was then followed by a tour of the yard and dry dock by fellow director Alasdair Ferguson. Mr Russell said: “The level of interest and the insightful questions were most rewarding”. And the schools were not the only locals to get a close-up view of the dock. Three dozen residents and community figures also got to enjoy tours of the year during the open days.

Mr Ferguson thanked all those who visited, adding: “Following the success of this event we hope to do another similar event in the future.”

The 160m diameter facility is one of the largest dry docks in western Europe and is ideally suited for use in the decommissioning, reactivation of rig, renewables and fabrication sectors. Recent upgrades included a concrete access ramp onto the dry dock floor, and a pumping system that allows the speedy dewatering of the dock.
