The Kirkmichael Trust’s work to restore historic buildings at the churchyard at Balblair on the Black Isle is nominated in three of the eight categories in this year’s RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Awards.

It will compete against the new Falls of Shin visitor centre for the community benefit and tourism and leisure awards and is also up for the building conservation award. If successful, the projects will then be eligible for the project of the year title, awarded to the scheme that demonstrates outstanding best practice and an exemplary commitment to adding value to its local area.

The Kirkmichael project involved the restoration of a derelict category B listed building at long-term danger of collapse and two large mausolea within the historic churchyard. It was led by a determined group of local volunteers.

The project included the creation of a display of archaeologically significant medieval ornamental grave memorials which are relocated for conservation purposes inside the Nave of the building, and adding interpretation throughout the site.

Judging panel chairman Colin Smith said: “This year we have received some extremely diverse and outstanding projects.

“The variety of projects highlights the development that is happening right across our nation and I am confident 2018 will be a hotly contested year.

“I look forward to celebrating the successes of Scotland’s exceptional talent and projects.”

The Scotland RICS Awards will be held on Thursday, April 19 in Edinburgh. It could then be up for a UK award.
