TWO Easter Ross groups combined to record-breaking effect last weekend as a community’s 100th parkrun was celebrated in style.

Members of Fyrish Gymnastics Club brought a vibrant splash of colour to last Saturday’s Alness Parkrun with participants, many covered in colourful chalk, helped swell the numbers involved to a new high of 244 runners and walkers.

The parkrun, which starts out at 9.30am every Saturday morning at the town’s Crawl Park, is a timed 5km social run which brings people together and promotes a healthy lifestyle. It has gone from strength to strength since being introduced to Alness around two years ago with special occasions sometimes being celebrated in fancy dress.

That was the case for the 100th event which saw several of the marshals – a total of 16 volunteers are needed each week to ensure it runs smoothly – letting their imaginations run rampant with outfits ranging from traffic cones to whoopee cushions. Mary Poppins also dropped in to join the fun.
