A 27-year-old Aberdeen man who fractured a fellow reveller's cheekbone after an altercation outside a popular bar and nightspot has been ordered to pay his victim £1500 in compensation.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that Kai Ross, of Corthan Crescent, Aberdeen was drinking heavily in Johnny Foxes on the night of December 16 last year when he squared up to another customer after leaving.

The other man was struck once in the face and an ambulance was called, such was the swelling, fiscal depute Robert Weir told Sheriff Gary Aitken.

CCTV filmed the incident and Mr Weir said Ross could be seen leaving the scene in a taxi.

"Police were able to trace through Paypal details and identify him from the taxi's CCTV," Mr Weir said. "Surgery was required for the complainer and he has been told there is nerve damage. He has been left anxious as a result."

Ross previously admitted assault to severe injury and impairment and had sentence deferred for a background report.

Defence solicitor advocate Clare Russell told the court: "Alcohol was a factor but it is not a particular difficulty in his life.

"He was out with friends for pre-Christmas drinks and there had been some interaction with others which was not particularly pleasant.

"He left the establishment but came into contact with them outside, words were exchanged and he struck out, hitting another man."

Sheriff Aitken told offshore oil worker Ross: "This is your fourth conviction for violence – the last one being in 2017. The only thing that is keeping you out of prison is the fact your previous convictions are of some vintage."

The compensation has to be paid at £100 per month.
