A paramedic was attacked by a Ross-shire plant operator who took umbridge at being told to stay out of the way as the ambulance man treated one of his friends.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told yesterday that 54-year-old Andrew Urquhart of Kilmuir Place, Invergordon had carried out the assault as the emergency workers were trying to treat the pal who had a hip injury.

Fiscal depute Ruraidh Allison said Uruqhart turned up and asked what was going on. "He was asked to leave, there was an argument and he challenged the paramedic to fight. The police were called."

Defence solicitor Graham Mann said his client "only had a vague recollection of what happened. His behaviour was completely unacceptable but the paramedic was pretty robust and restrained my client as he tried to get into the ambulance. Then there were some blows."

Urquhart had been remanded in custody awaiting sentence for that offence, which he admitted.

He had also previously admitted other offences of assault to injury, careless driving and driving with too much alcohol which occurred in January and February of the previous year.

Mr Allison told the court that the assault took place in the Ord Arms Hotel, Muir of Ord on January 31.

"He was socialising with another man and had a game of pool. There was an argument and he punched his victim on the head before throwing a further two punches.

"On February 1, police were on mobile patrol in Conon Bridge when they saw a vehicle on a grass verge. Officers got out to speak to the driver, but the car drove away, through a fence on to a residential street.

"It then crossed the road into a garden before colliding with a parked vehicle," Mr Allison added.

The prosecutor added that a breath test showed Urquhart was over three times the legal drink drive limit of 22mcgs of alcohol in his system. The reading was 68mcgs.

Urquhart was jailed for a total of six months, backdated to September 20 and banned from driving for 18 months.
