Cllr Jaci Douglas has quit the Independents group following the appointment of a new leader.

THE former leader of Highland Council's opposition Independents has unexpectedly quit the group.

Jaci Douglas, who represents Strathspey and Badenoch, has been a member of the Independents group for eight years.

Cllr Dougas: “While I remain committed to the principles of independent councillors as the best way to run local government, I feel that my continued presence within the Independent group will be a complicating factor given the recent election of Councillor Margaret Davidson as the new leader.

"This is a new phase for the group and I feel that I should step down immediately so the group can move forward as quickly and clearly as possible."

Councillor Douglas was recently made co-leader with Cromarty Firth councillor Carolyn Wilson.

Cllr Douglas will continue in her role as ward councillor.
