Black Isle artist Izzy Thomson has gone from strength to strength since graduating from Gray's School of Art.

Izzy Thomson, an honours graduate from the Gray’s School of Art, has been shortlisted from more than 1000 entries for the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize which carries a top award of £15,000.

Her oil on canvas work, Dipper, is being exhibited at a top gallery in London ahead of an awards ceremony in the capital next week.

The UK’s leading competition for British contemporary representational painting and drawing attracted 2194 works from 1144 artists.

Izzy, who is from Cromarty, said: “I am delighted to be one of the selected artists for the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize. This will be my first exhibition in London, which is exciting.

“I am currently working in a lovely studio in Cromarty. I won a solo show at Moray Arts Centre as part of their winter exhibition, so I am beginning to work towards that, as well as preparing for an upcoming residency at Cove Park. I have also just designed the front cover for the band The Jellyman’s Daughter and I have been working on illustrations for a children’s book.”

The awards will be revealed at the Mall Galleries this week.

Izzy made it to an 83-strong shortlist, bidding for a share of £30,000 prize money.

Ian Rowley, chairman of the organising committee, said: “This year, we’ve been staggered by the quality of the entries which show that representational art in the UK is in better health than the art establishment might surmise.”

Representational art seeks to capture the real world.
