A BIG hearted Ross-shire man is today (Sat) walking backwards up an infamous mountain pass to raise money for the Highland Hospice.

John Urquhart (62), from Ullapool, will attempt the hike with a difference over the Bealach nam Bò, a twisting, single track mountain road on the Applecross peninsula in Wester Ross.

It is the latest in a string of fundraising activities for John, whose late wife Rene was cared for by Highland Hospice. He is an ardent Highland Hospice supporter, who, as well as fundraising, also assists at many Hospice events.

But this weekend is all about John’s challenge, as he heads to Applecross for the gruelling fundraiser.

John said: "The excitement is building and I am really looking forward to setting off – it is going to be quite an experience. I’m hoping for good weather, but even if it’s inclement, I’m just going to give this a good go.

"The Hospice means so much to me – and I’ll do whatever I can support such an important cause. There is still time to sponsor me if anyone wishes to pledge their support."

Linda MacDonald, Highland Hospice’s fundraising manager, said: "Everyone at Highland Hospice will be wishing John well this weekend – the amount of support he gives to the Hospice is truly incredible. This is such an unusual fundraiser and we just know that John will put his all into it."

John’s backwards walk was inspired by friend Bernie Fish, who completed the challenge 20 years ago.

The Bealach nam Bò, Gaelic for Pass of the Cattle, is a spectacular Alpine-like pass which rises 2,053ft from the sea in five miles and features a series of hairpen bends.

If you wish to help John fundraise for Highland Hospice, you can sponsor him through his JustGiving site: www.justgiving.com/John-Urquhart

A team of supporters who will be accompanying John on the walk will have collecting buckets if any passing cars wish to stop and donate.
