A petty argument with his girlfriend led to a man scuffling with her father.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told when police arrived, Adam Cox (21) spat at one officer, although he did not make contact.

The incident happened on May 20, 2021 at a house in Castlehill Drive, Inverness after Cox and his partner had been socialising in a local pub.

Fiscal depute Robert Weir told Sheriff Sara Matheson that the couple returned to the family home and Cox was very intoxicated.

He said that there was a disagreement between Cox and the woman and her father went to see if everything was okay.

Cox of Rosehaugh Drive, Avoch swore at him, shouted abuse and then challenged the father to fight.

"A scuffle ensued as the father tried to remove him from the property. They ended up in the garden and Cox was restrained for a little while before he was let go." Mr Weir went on.

Meanwhile, police had been called and as a constable was trying to handcuff Cox, he spat in his direction.

Cox, who had no previous convictions, admitted threatening or abusive behaviour and assault.

Sentence was deferred for a background report which recommended a non-custodial disposal.

Sheriff Matheson agreed to follow the social worker's suggestion but told Cox the threshold for prison had been passed.

She ordered him to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work as an alternative to custody: "in view of your conduct towards the police and your attempt to spit on them."
