LOCAL shopkeepers who pulled out all the stops during lockdown to support their communities are now reaping the benefits of a shift towards people supporting businesses on their doorsteps.

That's the belief of one Easter Ross community activist following the "resounding success" of the first outdoor market staged since lockdown in Invergordon.

News that many of the 17 stallholders sold out of stock at the Invergordon Development Trust (IDC) event at Natal Garden at the weekend has buoyed hopes of a local bounce back following the five-month lockdown.

IDC's Marie Clarke said: "It was a resounding success. The support we had from the local community and beyond just blew us all away. Most of the traders went home empty. They sold out which is fantastic. It really feels like there has been a shift. People want to shop local and support local producers and that can only be a good thing. We heard from shop owners that the High Street was really busy as well so for us that's even better. If people come to the market then visit the high street shops then that's win-win."

Feedback from visitors afterwards was also good. Ann Crawford took to the group's Facebook page to say: "Congratulations, a job well done; what a great turnout. Thank you all for the hard work involved in making it happen. The quality of the stalls was outstanding, something for everyone."
