WORK that supports families and helps to keep children out of care in Ross-shire has received a massive financial boost.

Invergordon community project Aberlour Sustain has been handed £150,000 from the STV Children’s Appeal to support its work.

The project, run by children’s charity Aberlour, works collaboratively with professionals in the mid Ross area to prevent children - aged between eight and 13 years - from being taken into care. It does this through it dedicated team, which supports families at the earliest opportunity to prevent problems from spiralling out of control further down the line.

And STV News reporter Nicola McAlley visited the project with Aberlour’s Jim Wallace to meet some of the staff and children that will benefit from the new funding.

Mr Wallace, who is director of children and families, said: “Too many children in Scotland are taken into care. Whilst some children do need to be taken into care, there are undoubtedly situations where, if the right support is provided, this can be prevented.”

In eight years the STV Children’s Appeal has raised more than £19 million, with 1102 grants awarded to projects supporting over 79,000 children and young people.
