HUNDREDS of people gathered in the heart of Dingwall on Sunday to herald the town's countdown to Christmas with an eagerly anticipated torch parade and festive lights switch-on.

Ross County star Don Cowie joined local businessman Willie Gray and children involved in the town's gala week celebrations for the big switch-on which followed an atmospheric torchlight parade and a crowd-pleasing appearance by Cairngorm reindeer.

Community councillor Andrew MacIvor hailed a team effort in setting the scene for the event. He said: "It was excellent. There was an amazing turnout and the school choirs and Highland dancers were fantastic. It makes memories for children and that's what makes it all worthwhile. You couldn't have asked for a better day for it."

Jonnie Martin, chairman of Dingwall Pipe Band, said the group was honoured to asked to lead the torch parade. He said: "It was a fantastic evening, our young band members really enjoyed leading the parade and playing festive tunes for the crowd."

A number of local businesses plan selective late-night openings in the run-up to Christmas.
