FIGHTING the flab is a constant struggle for many, and all too often it is the flab that wins.

Some though find success with slimming clubs and organisations such as Slimming World, and the following is the experience of Alness member Liz Marsh (71).

“My journey with the Slimming World family started on July 26, 2011,” she said. “There was no specific event that triggered my decision, more a case of things happening in my life that I had no control over.

“This led to low self-esteem and not being happy about the way I was. I saw the poster advertising Slimming World and decided to go along.

“I was pleasantly surprised at the warm welcome I received and to see others in the same position as myself. What surprised me most was being told that I was not expected to starve myself thin, it was more a case of what you ate, not how much.

“With the support of a Slimming World adviser and their magazine recipes, I was able to eat more healthy meals and my weight started to drop.

“My target was to lose 4st, and I was losing pounds weekly and feeling better each time. The continuing support at the club reinforced my determination to reach my target weight.

“Initially I lost weight fairly consistently but started to find it hard when I got to the last 10lb. It never seemed to drop and my weight yo-yoed up and down but with Slimming World support, changing occasional chocolate treats and biscuits for fruit, veg and Slimming World biscuits, I finally made it.

“It wasn’t all plain sailing, holidays in Italy – ice cream and a glass of wine at dinner – resulted in a few pounds gained, but having the knowledge provided by Slimming World and the experience of how to eat healthily, I was soon back to my target weight.

“It took approximately nine months to reach my target and my reward was a shopping spree with a personal shopper to start to replace my wardrobe

“I’ve been a member of Slimming World for almost 10 years and still enjoy attending the meetings, even the Zoom ones in the current climate.

“I do not diet. I have an eating lifestyle and feel better and healthier for it.

“A bonus is playing with grandchildren without feeling worn out, and I have taken part in a 10k sponsored walk which I would never have been confident or fit enough to contemplate before Slimming World changed my outlook.

“We have a motorhome now and trips away find further places for walking the dogs, which is now an enjoyable experience.

“I am more at ease in my mind about how people may view me and intend to maintain this.”
