Shoppers at a Dingwall supermarket are being invited to support humanitarian aid efforts for Ukraine this weekend.

On Saturday (August 12), customers arriving at Tesco Dingwall superstore will be encouraged to include some small items for donation in their shopping trolley or basket.

The local Tesco has been asked to help tens of thousands of Ukrainians who have been left homeless following the recent collapse of the Kakhovka dam in the Dnipro area of the war–torn country.

Its destruction amid the ongoing invasion by Russia caused widespread flooding across the Kherson region in particular and families who had previously not been able to evacuate the area, which is regularly the target of enemy missiles, found their homes under water to roof level.

Cholera and e–coli discovered in the floodwaters mean they have a huge job to do to try to reclaim somewhere to live. Those affected are generally the more vulnerable who have been left behind, such as the elderly, frail and disabled.

Dnipro-based charity Wings of Ukraine has appealed to the Highlands to send aid, including food with a long shelf–life, toiletries, baby items including nappies and of course cleaning materials.

Tesco Dingwall store manager Stephen McEwan, along with community champion Michelle MacKay were delighted to be able to help the Ukrainian people once more.

Last year staff and customers at the supermarket raised almost £3000 in a sponsored in–store cycle which was used to buy food, water, first aid equipment and warm clothes.

On Saturday local humanitarian charity, Highlands for Ukraine, will be at the store from 10am till 5pm to collect any items shoppers are kind enough to donate to them. They will have a list of suggested items that are needed most urgently and will have trolleys in the store foyer where the donations can be left.

The charity will then sort all the items collected and deliver them directly to Wings of Ukraine via its regular lorry–loads of aid sponsored each month by North of Scotland transport companies such as Dyce Carriers. The Dingwall donations will join over 100 large boxes of aid which were donated by generous customers at Tesco stores in Inverness over the past few days.
