What matters the most to your employees? The core values of your organisation and flexible working schedules all rate highly, but there is one thing that trumps them all. The pay-packet at the end of the month. Without it bills cannot be paid, food cannot be bought and the luxuries in life would not be possible.

Making sure your staff get the correct wages at the correct time is probably one of the most important things you can do for them. It makes life easier for everyone. So, this is why you should invest in the right support to make this happen. And guess what!? There is a local business that specialises in just this.

Based in Fortrose, Chanonry Payroll Solutions was set up five years ago by Hayley Mudge to provide you with bespoke solutions for your company’s payroll.

Speaking about her business, Hayley said: “There are two sides to Chanonry Payroll Solutions. The first is outsourced payroll for businesses, pension administration, and HMRC submissions. We can provide electronic payslips or we can provide the information that is suitable for paper form. This is the side of my business that most businesses understand is available.

“However, the side of the business I love the most is consulting. I can consult on anything to do with payroll. I have retainer clients who contact me whenever they have a query. This ranges from bookkeepers to those in HR, or employers who just have a question about something to do with their payroll.

“I also help businesses that are setting up new software and give them guidance with their transition. Additionally, I can just provide support whenever there is a new project, and a business just needs an extra bit of help. I love the variety in all of this.”

“I also love putting on what I call my ‘CSI hat’ – I really enjoy problem solving and finding out the route of an issue and helping to fix it.”

Having a business that specialises in payroll is not something that Hayley would have ever expected to happen in her life. She commented: “It will be 20 years since I started in payroll this month. Like everyone else I fell into the industry. There is not one person I know that chose it as a career. Which is disappointing, as I love payroll, and if I’d known I would have considered it.

“I was made redundant from my office job, and when I was in my first jobseekers interview the person mentioned one about payroll. I asked for more information about it, and before I knew it, I was going for an interview for the job. That was my first payroll job where I worked for over five years, before I moved to my first payroll bureau.

“I learned so much about the industry, working with small and large companies and with sectors such as oil and gas.”

Explaining more about her drive to start her own business, Hayley said: “When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted more flexibility than my full-time job. About two weeks before I was due to go back to work, an old employer asked if I was free to work for them. I worked for them part-time for under a year while I set up the business, before I took them on as a client.

“If you told me 20 years ago that I would have my own payroll business I would never have believed you.”

In her first two years of business Hayley was a Highland Business Women Award finalist for New Business of the Year, and since then she has continued to build her client base, has one part-time employee and is in the process of building the business to take on a second.

“I hired Lauren as a trainee administrator in payroll at the end of last year”, said Hayley.

“She is doing brilliantly and has now started taking on her own clients and portfolios.

“I wanted to provide the option of part-time work for others, as I know the struggle of trying to balance work alongside having a young family. I want it to be flexible so people can be working around their life. If the deadlines are met, and clients are contacted on time and are happy, working hours can be flexible.”

Lauren is now taking on her own clients.

Starting a business has not been without its challenges, and Hayley has developed more confidence in herself over the last five years.

“Running my business has taken me totally out of my comfort zone”, said Hayley, “I’m not one for putting myself in the spotlight, and giving presentations and networking has been something that is all new to me.

“It has been a learning curve, and I have had to continually develop on this over the years. I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned so far and to everyone who has supported me and the business.”

If you want to get in touch with Hayley all you need to do is give her a phonecall, drop her an email or fill out a form on her website. She will arrange an appointment to find the right solutions that meet your life and business.

Hayley added: “I solely do payroll as I think it is a profession of its own and needs an expert dedicated to it.

“The consultancy side allows businesses to be supported, have flexibility and they don’t have to pay for something they don’t need.”
