A ROSS-SHIRE mother grateful for the support a children’s hospice gave her when she needed it most this week marked a sad anniversary with a big-hearted gesture.

Ethan Batchelor passed away in 2011, aged eight, having suffered from Congenital Disorder of the Glycosylation 1a (CDG1a).

He was a regular visitor to Robin House in Balloch.

Mum Kimberley McEley, who runs Poolewe’s Bridge Cottage Café, donated an entire day’s proceeds to Children’s Hospices Across Scotland – better known as CHAS – to mark the tenth anniversary of her son’s death on Tuesday.

The well-supported effort raised £1000, and to boost the sum even more Ethan’s father Russell – who works in Formula 1 racing – will be putting a hat signed by F1 winner Max Verstappen up for auction.

Kimberley said: “Ethan thoroughly enjoyed his visits to Robin House, the staff and fantastic facilities really helped enrich his short life.

“Ethan’s needs were so complex he required specialist care. Knowing he was in such very capable hands at Robin House and was having such a brilliant time gave me the opportunity to take some time to relax.”

Ruathy Donald, of CHAS, said it was “humbled” by the gesture and said the funds would “go towards helping many other families who are going through a similar situation right now”.

CHAS is the only charity in Scotland that provides hospice services for babies, children and young people with life-shortening conditions.
