Highland Hospice’s Beauly store received two donations of historical significance – a World War I artillery compass and a nautical sundial compass.

They are priced at £280 and £620 respectively.

The artillery compass comes from a German tank. It has a scope attached and would have been used to take aim during combat.

The charity also received a nautical compass with a wooden box. It was manufactured by Worthington & Allan, dating between 1821 and 1839.

Such instruments were first invented in 3500 BCE in Egypt, and use the sunlight to find north.
