It’s no secret that despite having visited an enviable number of international destinations, HRH King Charles III adores a break away like the rest of us.

This May, to celebrate his coronation, King Charles III will be bestowing the nation with an extra day off, and it seems as though British holidaymakers are planning to make the most of this extra bank holiday.

Glen Affric could be one of many Highland hotspots for holidaymakers during Coronation weekend.

Self-catering specialist cottages.com has spotted an interesting trend when it comes to bookings. Data shows the most popular locations for a ‘coronation staycation’ include some of His Majesty’s favourite spots – with the Highlands coming in at seventh place.

The Top 10 Locations* for a King’s coronation staycation include:

1. Cumbria

2. Yorkshire

3. Cornwall

4. Devon

5. Northumberland

6. Norfolk

7. Highland

8. Pembrokeshire

9. Derbyshire

10. Isle of Wight

Last October, the Highlands was named as one of National Geographic’s ‘Best of the World’ destinations for 2023.

The award-winning natural history publication revealed that the region is one of only two UK destinations to make the annual list.

The Royal family have always been very fond of Scotland, with Birkhall located on the Balmoral estate noted for its location as the place King Charles and Queen Camilla began their honeymoon in 2005.

Tom Bell, Vice President - Portfolio, at Awaze – the parent company of cottages.com said, “Interestingly, many of the King’s top destinations made it to the list including Yorkshire, Cornwall, Norfolk, and The Highlands. For the Coronation we’re seeing more Cumbrian destinations being booked in comparison to February half-term family getaways, for example. For those wanting to explore some of HRH’s favourites, people might like to explore places like Penzance in Cornwall, which is a great location to take a day trip over to the Isles of Scilly.”

Tom added, “For something a bit different, there’s Frampton on Severn - a beauty spot in Gloucestershire and just half an hour drive from HRH’s favourite residence, Highgrove House. It’s also reported that the King is partial to the Yorkshire Dales and is said to have a soft spot for The Blue Lion pub in East Witton near Leyburn – he reportedly loved the food so much, he returned the next day for round two. Lastly, we know that HRH has enjoyed many Christmases at Sandringham in North Norfolk and is also a big advocate of Cumbria’s farming community and heritage sites – these two locations also both made it to the top 10”.
