A 55-year-old man turned to cannabis to give him pain relief for a spinal and knee condition because he was concerned about the length of time he had been on powerful prescribed medication.

But Paul Doran, of Stuart Street, Ardersier took the cannabis edibles the night before August 19 and drove the following morning.

Inverness Sheriff Court was told that police were on mobile patrol in Dingwall and a check on Doran's car revealed he had no MOT.

Fiscal Sharon Ralph told Sheriff Gary Aitken: "He appeared to be under the influence of substances and a swipe test proved positive for cannabis."

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson told the court of his client's health problems and his attempts for relieving the pain.

"He takes a variety of prescription medication but was concerned about how long he had been on them and had been experimenting with cannabis edibles which he had taken the night before.

"His reading of 2.1mcg in his system was just over the safe limit of 2mcg."

Doran admitted drug-driving, was fined £520 and banned from driving for a year.
