THE Scottish SPCA is appealing for information after two pine martens were killed in a wood in the Highlands.

Scotland’s animal welfare charity was alerted on 21 June when the bodies were discovered on a pathway at Abriachan on Loch Ness-side by a local member of the public.

Senior Inspector Andy Brown said: "The person who called us spotted the pine martens on a pathway and strangely, one of them had been placed on top of the other.

"A post mortem examination has revealed that the pine martens sustained injuries consistent with forceful blows by a blunt object to the head in a targeted and skilled fashion.

"We are unsure why anyone would do such a cruel thing to these poor animals and are urging anyone in the area with information about this horrendous act to contact us on 03000 999 999 or Police Scotland on 101."
