A Highlands and Islands MSP has called for the “Post Office and government” to work together in response to another branch closure in Wester Ross.

The call comes after it was announced that the Balmacara Post Office would close on Friday, May 17.

Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP Jamie Halcro-Johnston said it was “disheartening” to see another Post Office service being lost to rural areas.

The news follows an announcement in March that Ullapool's Village Hall Post Office was set to close on March 29, and replaced by a new mobile post office service from Dingwall.

Mr Halcro Johnston said: “While I understand the challenges involved in maintaining these facilities, and that there are alternatives relatively nearby, it's still disheartening to see yet another example of local services being lost to rural areas.

“Those who live in our rural communities can rely more heavily on the face-to-face services that local post offices provide, and they are often places where some of our most vulnerable and isolated residents meet.

“It is quite clear that both the Post Office and government should be working together to take the action needed to prevent further closures in the future.”
