Charge Nurse Alison Finlay
It’s often said that not all heroes wear capes, but when Senior Charge Nurse Alison Finlay was in training she had a cape, a hat, and a bicycle, and it’s this type of can-do attitude that has led to her being shortlisted for Highland Hero healthcarer of the year.
Alison, based at Raigmore hospital in Inverness has been a nurse for 35 years.
Her nomination said: “Alison has met every challenge she’s faced over the past few years with laughter and without complaint. She goes above and beyond for every patient. Once, when an out-of-area couple asked her for directions to a clinic and she realised they were in the wrong building, she jumped into their car and directed them to where they needed to be so they didn’t miss their appointment!
“Alison is a great listener, plans parties for her colleagues and keeps everyone topped up with drinks and snacks. She’s even been known to go to the home of an unwell colleague to walk their dog and clean their kitchen. She’s a legend, and a perfect nurse!”
Driven by a passion for people and a cheery attitude, Alison says nursing has always been her calling: “I love caring for people and making their life a little bit easier. Being a surgical nurse means that I can help people in an immediate way by advocating for them and their needs and hopefully see them get better quickly so they can return to the comfort of their own home.”
She added: “I am really touched to have been nominated for this award.”
Dr David Goudie
A swift diagnosis and action has prompted Dr David Goudie of Raigmore Hospital to be shortlisted for a Highland
Heroes Healthcare Hero of the Year award.
Dr Goudie, who has been based at Raigmore Hospital as a paediatric consultant for the past two decades, has been praised by the parents of one of his patients who was admitted to Raigmore with a serious health condition.
On hearing of his nomination Dr Goudie, who specialises in gastroenterology and hepatology, said: “It’s incredibly rewarding when our team is able to deliver a quick diagnosis, treatment plan and appropriate nursing care. Any family whose child is experiencing serious health issues is under a great deal of stress; as a team we do our best to alleviate that as soon as possible.”
He concluded: “It’s a real morale boost to have been nominated and shortlisted; work that I do is possible because of the strength and functioning of our team as a whole. It’s affirming and encouraging to receive such recognition. Thank you.”
