A NEW partnership has been launched which aims to provide better access to bereavement care services.

Grief Matters Highland is a partnership between Highland Hospice, Crocus Group child and young person bereavement service, Cruse Bereavement Care Scotland and the NHS Highland Chaplaincy services.

The partnership was formed after a gap in support was recognised.

Research has shown that the top barriers to accessing support are reliable and easy-to-find information on what services are available, local provision of specialist one-to-one listening and counsellor support, and general informal support for those with no family and few friends living locally.

Andrew Leaver, head of fundraising and development at the hospice, said: “The aim of the partnership is to widen access and increase choice in bereavement care services available for people in the region, ensuring bereavement services are offered on an equitable basis regardless of age, location or cause of death of the loved one.

“Bereavement has been linked to a number of adverse outcomes, including poor socio-economic and health outcomes. Given the scale of the impact of bereavement on individuals, families and communities it is imperative that a bereaved person is able to access the support they need.”

Two different initiatives are about to be delivered through Grief Matters Highland, facilitated by the hospice. A service, named A Time to Remember, is open to all who have suffered bereavement will take place on November 9 in the hospice and is led by chaplain Norma Higgott.

A Living with Grief group will start in November.
