FOUR further cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in the Highlands – but the number of hospital patients is down almost a third.

Some 236 people have now been confirmed as having contracted the virus in the NHS Highland area since the outbreak began.

That number came as the Scottish total passed through the 11,000 mark – up 313 since yesterday to 11,034.

A further 83 people who have tested positive have died, taking the confirmed total to 1415 across Scotland. Seventy-two of those deaths have been recorded in the NHS Highland area.

Some 43 people were being treated for Covid-19 in NHS Highland hospitals at midnight last night, down from 61 at the same point yesterday. The number in intensive care also fell below five.

Those falls were mirrored at the national level, with 1727 people receiving hospital treatment (down 27), and 12 fewer people in intensive care (114).

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were once again no fresh confirmed cases of the virus in Orkney, Shetland or Eileanan Siar.

NHS Grampian's figure, meanwhile, passed the 800 mark – after rising a further 41 to 813.

The number of people receiving treatment for the virus in its hospitals rose slightly, up seven to 104, of whom 10 were in intensive care.

There were 40 new cases in NHS Tayside, taking its total to 1313. Ninety-six people were being treated in its hospitals for Covid-19.
