A SENIOR Highland councillor’s persistent calls for a copy of the leader Margaret Davidson’s meetings diary has led to accusations that he is acting like a "jealous husband".

At meetings of the full council since Councillor Davidson moved into the top post six months ago, Black Isle Lib Dem councillor David Alston has asked her to list all the meetings that she has attended as well as the meetings she plans to attend for the forthcoming three months.

The list, submitted at today’s full council meeting, shows that, excluding internal council meetings and appointments connected with her role as a ward councillor for Aird and Loch Ness, the leader attended 34 meetings between August 24 and October 14.

Council leader Margaret Davidson says she is not obliged to publish details of external meetings in advance.

Her report says she will be attending a number of external meetings in the coming weeks but added: "I will not be publishing this information in advance."

Jim Crawford, Inverness South councillor who is a member of the council’s Independent administration, claimed Cllr Alston was "just trying to find fault".

He said: "His actions are that of a jealous husband concerned about the actions of his wife.

"He didn’t do this to the last leader. It’s only since Margaret moved into the role. He’s trying to catch her out. He’s just trying to find fault."

But Cllr Alston said his requests were in the public interest because it was important that everybody knew what the council leader was focussing on.
