Highland Council has been forced to return 3380 new bins for improvements to its waste and recycling collections across the region because they were found to be “defective”.

The council says four loads of 845 bins were problematic but this does not account for a large proportion of the total – the service requires up to 144,000 bins for the new service.

Households in Ross and Cromarty – and Dornoch – are to be the first to get the new bins with details coming in a letter in the post over the next four or five weeks which will explain what is changing and when.

The letters will explain that green (or grey) bins will be used to recycle mixed plastics, metals and food and drink cartons. Blue bins will be used to recycle paper, card and cardboard only.

Each of the recycling bins will be collected every four weeks.

But despite the defective bins there will be no delay to the rollout of the new service as the “minor problems which were identified with the bins have now been resolved and the new bins will be rolled out as planned.”

A spokesperson for The Highland Council said: “The council began taking delivery of new bins for phase one of the roll-out in February.

“Following routine checks in place for the receipt of goods, a small percentage of the stock received was identified for return to the supplier.

“Given the scale of the roll-out, minor issues arising are to be expected. The matter has been addressed and will not disrupt the start of the new bin roll-out.”
