Wester Ross recorded Scotland's warmest day of the year on Thursday, as many parts of the Highlands enjoyed blue skies and sunshine.

Although some eastern coastal parts took a while for early cloud to clear, other parts of the region woke to beautiful clear skies.

And the mercury responded accordingly, with the temperature topping out at 22.1C in not one, but two separate Wester Ross locations - Kinlochewe and Achnagart.

Elsewhere, the other UK home nations also posted their warmest days of the year so far too.

The mercury hit 20.3 in Castlederg in Northern Ireland, 22.8C in Hawarden in Wales, and 23.4C in Santon Downham in England.

A Met Office spokesperson said: "It's been the warmest day of the year so far in all four home nations. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland all recorded a temperature above 20°C.

"But where it stayed cloudy or with a wind off the sea, temperatures were significantly lower than this."
