Inverness Business Improvement District (BID) is set to begin the search for a new chief executive after Mike Evans unexpectedly stepped down from the role after about a month in the post.

Mr Evans, who took up the post in early February, is understood to have told the Inverness BID board that he wished to stand down for personal reasons and his resignation has been accepted with immediate effect.

Former BID manager Mike Smith, who retired in January, will continue to lead on BID's major events and activities in his advisory capacity while the recruitment process gets under way and until a new appointment is made.

Inverness BID chairman Peter Strachan, UK rail chairman for Caledonian Sleeper operator Serco, said that the board acknowledged and respected Mr Evans' decision.

He commented: “I understand and respect Mike’s decision and wish him well personally for the future.”

Mr Evans came into the post from an accountancy background.

As well as running his own business, he has served in non-executive director roles with NHS Highland, the Cromarty Firth Port Authority (now the Port of Cromarty Firth) and GlenWyvis Distillery, and was chief executive of the Pultneytown People's Project in Wick.
