PEOPLE in the north west Highlands who use GPS could see the service disrupted when a major military exercise gets under way next week.

Exercise Joint Warrior will run from Saturday April 11 until Friday April 24 and will involve the navy, army and the RAF across the UK.

The Nato exercise is held twice a year, in the spring and in the autumn.

It will feature 55 warships and submarines, 70 aircraft and around 13,000 personnel from 18 participating countries.

The MoD says that part of the training will involve the jamming of GPS (global positioning system).

It says this will be limited to a confined area in the north west of Scotland.

"The relevant authorities, including aviation and maritime communities, have been consulted and procedures are in place for any unforeseen activity that might arise," said a spokesman.

The exercise will see major naval and aerial activity off the west and east coast of Scotland, including amphibious landings on the west coast.

Aircraft will operate from locations including RAF Brize Norton, RAF Waddington, RAF Marham, RAF Leeming and RAF Lossiemouth.
